On April 26th, 2014 the Abraham Baldwin Chapter members went to Cartersville and toured the Booth Western Museum.  The museum houses an expansive exhibit of Western Art as well as a section attributed to the Presidents of the United States.  This section includes photographs of each president, a short biography, and original letters written by man of the presidents.  There is an area exhibiting Civil War paintings, and sculptures and features many Georgia campaign events.

The museum is located in downtown Cartersville withmany exquisite bronze sculptures gracing the beautiful grounds.  Of course the trip included a stop for lunch.

A brunch for

CAROLINE

Caroline Campbell Bailey (L.) was home for a visit and we had a brunch to celebrate!  On Saturday September 6, 2014 at Alice Robinson's school house we gathered and Caroline shared video about their work in Romania, with the group "Youth with a Mission."

She and her husband teach the children English and a lot of life skills.  One of the biggest projects this year has been  to add a well for clean-free water to irrigate the garden and provide for the boys' home. Caroline was presented an Appreciation Certificate and two DAR Junior pins. Caroline's mother Laura Campbell (L.), Grandmother Dorothy Whitworth (C.), came with her and enjoyed brunch!

Pictured below from left to right are:

DAR Service for Veterans

Regent Alice Robinson (left) and Chairman Violette Denney visited with Veterans Service Field Officer Ted Merriss, at the Trinka Davis Outpatient Clinic. We asked how we could help homeless or needy veterans through his office.  He suggested that he liked to have "Care Gift" (blankets, etc.) and $10 gift cards for fast food restaurant to encourage them and show that we care!  If anyone wants to join us on this project, please contact alicerobinsondar.gmail.com or Violettehd@aol.com.

The American Containers, Inc. on Beulah Church Road, Carrollton always exhibits the United States of America Flag in a very prestigious way.  They are very conscientious about keeping our country's symbol flying high and in good condition.  Regent Alice Robinson (left) presented an Appreciation Certificate to the Chief Operating Officer John M. Keith with DAR members Violette Denney and Martha Stapler and Clayton Keith (John Keith's son) looking on.  John Keith said, "I am proud to fly the flag.  I raise it every morning at home and lower it every night and I even had a big flag display at my mother's memorial service because she was a very patriot person, too."

What do you do with a truck load of fabric ~ share it of course!  Good friend, Barbara Cavender, surged the edges of several large pieces and I carried two stacks to the Women's Emergency Shelter (Good Samaritan Transitional House) which can be used in decorating or creating a garment to wear.  Amanda Nichols (left) accepted the gift from Violette Denney.

Celebrating the Constitution

The Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta served the Constitution luncheon and we all enjoyed an outstanding speaker, William D. Moorhead, III as he spoke about "Culture and the Constitution."

Pictured l. to r. are: SAR, Violette Denney, Sherryll Miles, SAR, Alice Robinson, Jan Marlow, Johnnie Baldwin, and another SAR (Son of the American Revolution).

Marcie Fletcher speaks about Abraham Baldwin

Regent Alice Robinson, left, welcomed speaker Marcie Fletcher, and Joan finch introduced her to the chapter and read her biography.  The luncheon was held at the Sunset Hills Country Club  on September 18, 2014.  Fletcher presented a lots of facts about Baldwin that were new to most chapter members.  Our chapter in Carrollton is named for Abraham Baldwin, who according to the chapter, exemplifies everything DAR strives to do - education, preservation and patriotism. In fact the DAR Chapter is not the only thing named to honor his name - there are counties, a town, college, library, building, street, and even an apple that do so.

Fletcher and Robinson are discussing some important business, I am sure before eating their lunch.  The basket of Mums were presented to Fletcher as a token of the chapter's appreciation. The Christmas quilt in front will be used to raise funds for the chapter's scholarship and veterans projects.  If you are interested in voices, contact any member.  The quilt is regular bed size and it was donated by Susan Lenaeus.

Books for "My Book Spot" were collected at the DAR meeting for the "Little Libraries" that can be found on the side of the street with many books for children through age 17 to read. They are located in areas not close to a lending library to give children the opportunity to have books in their hands and in their homes.  Books are needed, and residents can drop off new or gently used books at the Chamber of Commerce.  From left are Marge Schulhof, Susan Lenaeus, Carole Riddle, and Laura Miller with the books collected that day.

Heritage Days - Sept. 25 & 26, 2014

The 19th Annual Heritage Days exhibits and demonstrations at the Carroll County AG-ED Center were held for the fourth grades in all Carroll County.  Members of the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park and the American Legion Post 143 demonstrated how a USA flag is retired.

This year over 1200 students toured the 19th-century farmstead and experienced life on the farm as well as the one-room schoolhouse.  Beginning at 9 A.M. the classes were guided over the Heritage Trail where a great number of presenters covered things like Homestead living (Log cabin, Blacksmith, and the Mountain Man), a live American Indian teepee and demonstration, a Revolution Presentation staring Charles Carroll who explained the Betsy Ross Flag and the other flags of the Revolution, a complete Confederate Army Camp with soldiers firing muskets and a canon, etc.

Then at 12:30 each day approximately 600 fourth graders gathered on the ground in front of the Flag Retirement Team for the formal retirement of one "Old Glory" which is beyond serving as our National Symbol any longer.  As the students look at their heritage and see a little of the 19th century farmstead they can begin to visualize the life lived by their grandparents and great-grandparents and imagine life without computers and air conditioning, etc.  This experience should enrich their cirriculum and give them a new appreciation for eduction and our Veterans.

THE AMERICANS CREED

I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people, whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed, a democracy in a Republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States, a perfect Union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes, I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its constitution; to obey its laws; to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

DAR Service to Veterans

Septenber 11, 2014

The Abraham Baldwin Chapter Regent Alice Robinson (left) and Chapter Chairman of Veterans Services Violette Denney visited with Veterans Service Field Officer Ted Merriss.  The Field Officer was very busy helping veterans but took a couple of minutes to discuss ways the DAR could help him assist veterans with needed items.  Merriss works with the Georgia Department of Veteran Services at the Trinka Davis Outpatient Clinic in Carrollton, Georgia.  He suggested that he liked to give them "Care Gifts" and gift cards for fast food restaurants (where only food is sold) to encourage them and show that we care!  This will be a continuing project and chapter members are asked to contribute as they are able to.  Anyone wanting to join with us on this project should contact alicerobinsondar@gmail.com or Violettehd@aol.com

"Gift Items" for our Homeless Veterans were delivered to Veteran Field Officer Ted Merriss on Friday October 10, 2014 by the Abraham Baldwin Chapter Regent Alice Robinson (left) and Chairman Violette Denney.  We appreciation the local McDonald and WalMart for assisting us with these items!

October 18, 2014 Meeting

It seemed appropriate to have a student/Eagle Scout to lead the Pledge of Allegiance to the USA Flag and the Georgia Flag.  Robert Shipp and his mother attended the meeting and Robert led the pledges.  He is a student at Oak Mountain Academy.

Johnnie Baldwin and her family visited Crossnore DAR School and she shared some interesting high lights of their visit.  A grandson was with them and he "went away knowing" how fortunate he is to have a family and home!  The Crossnore School is where miracles happen every day.  For over one hundred years the school has provided a Christian sanctuary of hope and healing for children in need.  As a nationally recognized Residential Education Model, it provides a state-of-the-art public charter school on the campus of a beautiful 85-acre children's home.  The school is designed to care for and nurture each child's mind, body, and spirit.  The on-site services and wide variety of extra-curricular and enrichment activities make it a unique place for children to live, learn, and prosper.  The children come from all over NC and range in age from 1-19.  The special focus is on keeping sibling groups together.

Joan Finch and her husband Fred Finch took a trip to Tamassee and toured the campus.  Fred showed a video and briefly walked us through part of the school and told us interesting facts along the way.  The Tamassee DAR School was established in 1919 by the South Carolina Daughters of the American Revolution and recognized by the National Society as a DAR School in 1924, with the objective of providing an opportunity for a formal education to children in the rural Appalachian Mountains.  They believe all children can learn and be succcessful when placed in the proper educational environment.  They work with the child and family to identify strengths, weaknesses, and interests, utilizing what they know to empower the child to feel successful and eager to learn by building on those identified strengths and talents.

Our local library is appreciated and our chapter Regent Alice Robinson (center) presented an "Appreciation Certificate" to Lecia Moran, who is the Branch Manager, to express our gratitude.  DAR member Violette Denney (right) was there to help show how much we enjoy visiting the library and using the resources available there.

Margaret Schulhof, center, received her 10 Year Membership Certificate from Registrar Violette Denney, left, and Regent Alice Robinson.  She has served in several different positions here and as chapter regent in Illinois before relocating to Georgia.  Currently she is the chapter chaplain.

Registrar Violette Denney (left) was excited to meet a prospective member Sally Thomason who she had been working with via e-mail to complete her membership application.  Thomason is an attorney and works in Atlanta so it was hard to find time to even sign her application.  She had plans to spend the day with her mother but took time to drop by the library and sign the application before the meeting.

Linda Mears (left) and Sherryll Miles were hostesses and provided beautiful fall decorations and delicious treats.  Food is part of the Fun and Fellowhip that is enjoyed when DAR members meet.  Anyone interestedin joining DAR should contact alicerobinsondar.gmail.com

The interesting program held everyone's attention as they learned more about out DAR schools. L-R Idys Overton, Marge Schulhof, Johnnie Baldwin, Tina Clune, Martha Stapler, Linda Mears, Stephanie Ray, Alice Robinson, Carole Riddle, Julia Rose (visitor), and Wendy Quinn

L - R: Mrs. Shipp, Robert Shipp, Sherryll Miles, Marge Schulhof, Idys Overton, and Tina Clune

Regent Alice Robinson opened the meeting with the DAR rituals, prayer, and pledges.  She recognized the visitors and introduced the program.  Recently two members visited two DAR schools: Tamassee in Tamassee, SC and Crossnore in Crossnore, NC.  It was an eye-opening experience for both of them and they presented information about the schools.  These schools were established to provide not only education but a home for needy children.
